A couple of months ago, I had seen an article in the local paper about 28North, a relatively new gastropub in Erie. I checked out their menu online, and it looked interesting–there was some of the normal pub type fare, but some nice innovative variations. The pictures looked modern and funky, so I have been itching for the opportunity to try it out.
The ambiance and appearance did not disappoint.
This definitely does not have the usual neighborhood bar feel, but, by the same token it is not intimidating, either. We walked in during happy hour, and our first thought was, oh, no…this is going to be noisy…but we sat on the side away from the bar, and we had no trouble talking without having to raise our voices.
There are some fun sayings painted onto the wall–the definition of gastropub (a pub that specializes in serving high quality food and spirits), and “bacon–the main reason you are not a vegetarian.” Everything is clean and modern without being spare.
On to drinks! The website had touted their skill with handcrafted cocktails, so I opted for a White Berry Martini that is listed as a signature drink, and was offered at a Happy Hour Price. It was strawberry vodka, raspberry vodka with raspberries and blackberries. It was a beautiful drink…I am not sure what I expected, but it was sort of sweet..something you could drink many of, without a problem. My eating partner was thrilled that his favorite red wine was also offered at Happy Hour. The wines are generally well known wineries, with choices of 5 or 6 in both red and white. The friendly waitress gave us a list of beers on draft. She indicated that they change very frequently; most of those when we visited were IPAs.
We selected two items from the snack menu–Risotto Bite
s and Saucy Shrimp. The Bites are fried balls of cheesy risotto served with a marinara sauce. They were tasty, and not at all greasy. The one comment is that I would have preferred the marinara sauce warm vs cold. We couldn’t decide which sauce to choose for the shrimp (lemon garlic butter, sweet chili or honey ginger) and the waitress offered to give us some of each. The little puffy naans were perfect for each nice sized shrimp! Our common favorite sauce..the lemon garlic…although they all were good.
Next we went on to the selections of Poutines! For those not in the know of these great Canadian snacks..a poutine is a mound of french fries with gravy and cheese curds. It may sound gross…but it is delicious! There were four choices, and we picked the Bourbon Duck, which consisted of shredded duck, and the most wonderful dark bourbon gravy and large cheese curds. It was wonderful…with the one comment…that the curds were very large and not entirely warmed through. This was solved by cutting them up and swirling them in the french fry gravy mixture.
On to the Flatbread Pizzas…our waitress told us the most
popular was the Caprese (with tomato, fresh mozzarella), but I wanted something a bit different–and went for the Polynesian. I usually don’t like pineapple on my pizza, but this was a good combination of smoked pork, bacon, pickled red onion, pineapple salsa, mozzarella, red sauce and a sweet chili drizzle. The crust was excellent, and there was a very good topping to crust ratio.
Finally, we skipped over the burgers and went for a taco. I thought the most unusual was the Korean (which we ordered) that had bulgogi beef, kimchi, pickled red onion and sriracha drizzle. It was tasty–but I would have like either some more kimchi or some filler crunchy greens in it. As a side we got homemade parmesan french fries…we couldn’t stop eating them, even though both of us were quite full by now!
We asked after dessert. We were
told that it is not consistently offered, although that night there were two choices. We opted for the Funnel cake with caramel sauce, which came out looking like french fries…but that just made them easier to eat. Sad to say, we polished them all off!
Definitely a fun place to go if you are downtown, and looking for some fun food and drinks! 28North definitely meets their definition of gastropub!
