Have you ever picked peaches? I hadn’t until this weekend. In fact this year, I have spent time harvesting (aka u-pick) strawberries, blueberries, cherries, peas, and most recently…peaches! I was afraid that I would have climb ladders to get to the peaches (as you sometimes have to do for cherries), but I was pleasantly surprised that the trees are all trimmed so that it really isn’t necessary.
We went to Gary Youngs Fruit Farm after seeing a couple of posts on facebook. What a great drive through the countryside! And the view of the lake! There are other farms that both sell peaches and allow you to pick them, such as Sceiford Farms and Clorley Farms for blueberries, but we picked this one (no pun intended!).
It was a gorgeous day for picking peaches–blue skies, nice breeze. We were told that the day before a group had come and picked almost ALL the peaches, so we would have to search a bit. We found plenty of peaches, but most of them weren’t quite ripe. I reallly didn’t mind, because I know that they will ripen in a few days in paper bag. One of my recipes at the inn, for Roasted Peaches, actually calls for slightly hard peaches, so they hold their shape when you roast them.
What did surprise me was that the trees were all on a hill. A pretty steep hill. But that was ok, because in less than an hour, I was able to fill two large boxes (which they had for sale). Each box full of peaches was $8! Wow! What a steal!
I heard that blueberries were still open for picking, and then after that…apples! I don’t know about you, but I love being able to eat the fruits of my workout!
So all week long I have been cooking with peaches..make sure you check the recipe on our website for Peach Muffins!
I have been trying new things–this morning was Peach Cobbler Coffee Cake, and earlier was Peach Scones…so I hope everyone likes peaches!
